Science Fair 2010

As the UAE begins to tackle its global footprint, students from Grades 7-9 participated in a month long project, with the aim of highlighting the importance of living a sustainable life.

In ICT lessons students carried out work based on the ‘Hero’s of the UAE’ campaign. A campaign set up by the UAE’s environmental agency in collaboration with the World Wildlife federation. This work supported the projects designed by the students themselves, which require students to employ and develop investigational and analytical skills.

Projects ranged from building turbines to investigate the effect of increased height of water fall on the generation of electricity, investigating the effect of pollutants on the growth of plants, and the different levels of air pollution within parts of Dubai. Some students even chose to compare the ability both men and women have to multitask…. These projects, amongst numerous others, demonstrated the fantastic creativity and imagination our students have!

Having worked hard on their projects for many weeks, April the 11th was their chance to show off their efforts, and present their findings to the judges. Facing questions from the judges, which were composed of: representatives from the senior leadership team of SRS, parents, students from grade 10, and our sponsors, this was going to prove to be a tough task. A special thanks goes out to Mrs Farzana, and Dr Kaitoob for their help with the judging. An even bigger thanks goes to our sponsors of the event, National Bonds and Mr Mohammed Qasim Al Ali (CEO).

For two years National Bonds have provided us with generous sponsorship which has enabled our students to be congratulated with prizes such as telescopes, galaxy projectors, digital cameras and Science kits. They have supported us in both the award ceremony and the judging. Without such sponsors the event would not be the success it is!

However, it wasn’t just our key stage 3 students who got to show off their talents and enjoy the day. Students from grade 10 were set the task of planning and leading a morning of Science lessons to our grade 6 students. This enabled them to not only gain perspective of the work involved teaching and its rewards, but also developed their own understanding of the topic ‘Chemical reactions’. Our grade 6’s enjoyed the experience immensely, and with the enormous potential demonstrated by students such as Amna Al Fahim, we are hoping in a few years that the SRS Science Department maybe gaining a few more teachers!  Not to be left out, our Grade 11 students also participated in the event, preparing and running activities based on endangered. “We had a really fun day and got to see what the teachers have to do each day. We hope the students enjoyed themselves and liked the video we made! We want to thank all the teachers for their help and our sponsors, National Bonds, who helped with the prizes” – Reem Al Awadi

Whilst the Mad Science crew wowed and the grade 11’s amused, the judges were kept busy viewing over 75 different projects. At 2pm the 2010 Platinum Prize winners were announced. A big congratulations goes to Sabahat and Laila for their solar oven as well as Hisham, Musab and Yusuf for their investigation into green house gases.

Well done to all those that competed and participated in what turned out to be a truly entertained and spectacular day!
