Primary Year Groups & Subject Information

Year 1

Year 1 have a very exciting year ahead! In year 1 we aim to make learning meaningful and fun! Our learning will be based on the following topics: Holidays, toys (term 1) day and night (term 2) and buildings (term 3). Most of the learning activities will be practical although we will also begin to record our learning in written format. We will attend a number of trips to support learning. For example we plan to visit the Bear Factory to make a bear, which we will then take on a teddy bears’ picnic.  We look forward to working with you to enable your child to reach their full potential.

Year 2

In Year2, we teach the children using a range of active learning strategies, thinking skills and cross curriculum based learning approaches, in order to enhance the learning and teaching among the year group.
Our aim is to give the children a broad understanding of the world around them, using role play and drama exercises to develop and encourage their skills in the English language.

Year 4

As part of the International Primary Curriculum, Year 4 will be learning through the topics: Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Airports, Money and Trade and Habitats. We will be linking our literacy, science and numeracy with these topics throughout the year.

Year 5

In Year 5 we will be encouraging the pupils to be more independent and to develop their study skills.
In English we will continue to develop the pupils’ speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. Maths will build upon the work of Year 4 and pupils will be encouraged to develop their problem-solving skills and mental arithmetic strategies.
All other subjects will be taught in a creative, multi-sensory way through the International Primary Curriculum which the school is introducing this year 2011/2012.

Key Stage 1

Aims and objectives: the distinctive purpose of Key Stage 1, which covers pupils from KG 2 to Grade 2, is to lay the foundation of future learning by:

a) Developing the basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, number and information and communication technology.

b) Developing appropriate skills and correct attitudes in investigations.

c) Introducing young children to a broad range of interesting content spanning the subjects of the curriculum.

d) Promoting positive attitudes to learning and helping young children to work and play together harmoniously.

Key Stage 2 and 3:

this covers 8 years of learning between the ages of 7-14 years. Over such a long period the learning needs of the children will gradually change. As they become more proficient in their reading and writing, the time they need to concentrate upon English will gradually reduce, and as consequence, more time will be available for Science and the other foundation subjects.

Key Stage 4

covers the ages 14 - 16 when pupils are prepared for GCSE and IGCSE courses and the Ministry Thanawiyah.  The GCSE and IGCSE are internationally recognised British courses accredited by the University of London and Cambridge Examinations Syndicate.

Standard Assessment Tasks

At the end of Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 the students sit the SATS, (Standard Assessment Tasks) which tests their knowledge, understanding and skills in the core areas of the National Curriculum (mathematics, English and science).

These are the Standardised Tests taken by all children studying in British Curriculum Schools, and form the foundational knowledge base for further study at GCSE and A/AS level.
